The movie was originally supposed to hit theaters in March. However, Warner Bros. decided to delay it to November 20, which is where things stand presently. Movie theaters have been closed in the U.S. and across much of the world for months.
Set in the 1930’s, the story portrays smoking as a common habit of many of the sailors. A good stiff drink helps Carl subdue his nerves during the adventure. Dancing girls are shown performing in cleavage bearing outfits. Violent portrayals include the impaling of one man and the beheading of another by natives (some of whom are scantily dressed). Huge creatures attack the voyagers, eating some of them, crushing several and tossing others to their deaths.
- Per the MPAA, the movie has been rated PG-13 for “intense sequences of creature violence/destruction and brief language.” That sounds in line with what we have come to expect from these movies over the last handful of years.
- The fearsome beast takes a shine to blonde bombshell Fay Wray, which leads to his downfall.
- From other seamen, they’ve heard ominous tales of a 100-foot wall and mythical creatures.

Any movie with Jessica Lange’s aspiring starlet Dwan orgasmically enjoying the heat of Kong’s breath after taking a waterfall shower is playing up the story’s inherent absurdity to the point of camp. Lange, in fact, is orgasmic in nearly every scene – it’s no wonder the ape picks up on her come-hither scent. Then there is odd man out Jeff Bridges, uneasily trying to anchor a potential blockbuster as a hippie scientist who stows away on the expedition. I’m not sure which is more jarring – Bridges’ lackadaisical line readings in his early scenes or his maniacal devotion to the material during Kong’s climactic death.

Carl is more scurrilous (and by the end less likable) than in the original Kong.
